The University of North Dakota announces a nationwide search for a new Dean of the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences

The University of North Dakota (UND) seeks an innovative, entrepreneurial, and visionary dean for the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, who has their pulse on the industry and who will help define the future of aerospace sciences. The dean will have the opportunity to make a significant impact in shaping the direction of the School to support the established vision. The dean will inherit a world-renowned center for aerospace learning, nationally acclaimed for achievements in collegiate aviation education, atmospheric research, space innovation and research, and Earth system science and policy research. With more than 500 faculty and staff members, almost 2000 students from around the world, and a myriad of programs and projects, the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences is the future of flight.

Reporting directly to the provost, the dean is the chief executive officer of the Odegard School and is responsible for its effective administration. The dean provides strategic vision, leadership, and support for academic excellence and integrity to further the university’s academic mission and strategic goals through outstanding teaching and learning, exceptional scholarly and creative activity, and meaningful service to the public. The dean plays a central role, individually and as part of the leadership team, in the university’s academic administration. The dean is involved with student learning, retention, and recruitment. In addition, the dean plays a key role in strategic planning, budget, facilities, and research. Moreover, the dean is a leading participant in external relations of the university, working in conjunction with the UND Aerospace Foundation, including fundraising, alumni relations, economic development, legislative priorities (federal and state), and public relations.

The next dean must have an advanced degree at the master’s level or above and a minimum of 5+ years demonstrated leadership experience in industry and/or academia. It is desired that the ideal candidate possesses exceptional accomplishments in the aerospace field, whether in industry, higher education, or the government, attained pilot certificate, demonstrated experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS), and a commitment to educating the next generation of practitioners and maintaining excellence in education while at the same time, supporting scholarship and research. Candidates should be able to demonstrate visionary leadership, well-developed written and verbal communication skills, the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students with an open, transparent, engaging interpersonal style, and effectiveness working in and promoting a diverse, inclusive, and multicultural environment.
